BREAKER By Paul Stevens.... February-April 1989
-----------------------------------------------
OK Then.... Simple overview first....
I should think everyone in the known universe knows how to play the game
BREAKOUT or ARKANOID....
Well, this game (BREAKER) is a mix between the two.
Plus it has 50 levels, 10 Special function bricks,
And a Superb LEVEL EDITOR, so you can alter any of the current levels,
Or make up brand new one's yourself....
To Play the game you just use your mouse to move a bat across the
screen, and bouce the ball into the bricks..... (Sounds easy eh!)
You start the game with 3 lives (1-3) and everytime you miss a ball you
will loose a life.
Once your Balls have gone to Zero then GAME OVER !!
However, a Bonus ball is awarded every 1000 points. Up to a maximum of
9 balls.
Ahhh, but all is not quite so simple as it seems.
As well as the multitude of normal bricks to destroy there are 10 very
special ones, Each have their own unique functions, as I will point out
below:
---------------
SPECIAL BRICKS:
---------------
JUMPER BRICKS - If these exist on the screen, hitting one of them will
instantly transport your ball to the other, coming out
in a random direction (Beware!!!!!)
SLOW BALL BRICKS - Whatever speed or angle your ball is travelling in
when it hits one of these bricks, it will be instantly
slowed to it's minimum speed and angle.....
2 BATS BRICKS - Hitting on of these special bricks will make your bat
into two bats. (One above the other) so you have Twice
the amount of chances of hitting the ball, But beware
of bouncing off the underside of the upper bat !!!
DROPPER BRICKS - These can be nasty. If your ball hit's one of these
the brick will GRAB the ball, and together with itself
will come hurtling fast down the screen, On it's way it
will wipe out anything it comes into contact with
(Apart from JUMPER or SOLID bricks) You must do your
best to catch it.......
INVISIBLE BRICKS - Pretty obvious really.... The same as any normal brick
apart from it being INVISIBLE, so you never know where
it could be on the screen.....
GRABBER BRICKS - When you do hit one these bricks, for the following TEN
times when you hit the ball with your Bat, the ball
will Stick to your bat, then you can reposition the bat
And when you are ready, Press the left mouse button to
re-start the ball
SCORE X2 BRICKS - Again, pretty obvious. This brick will double the
number of points you are currently getting for hitting
each brick... At the start you will be earning 10
points per brick. Hitting this will take that to 20
points per brick, then 40 points then 80 points MAX.
The current Xscoring is displayed alongside your Score.
SOLID BASE BRICKS - This is a Nice brick to hit... It will put a row of
solid bricks above your bat, so you are safe from
worring about missing a ball for 20 hits worth.
However, even this will not stop the DROPPER brick
which will wipe through even this wall !!!!!
DESTROYER BRICKS - Sound`s nasty but isn`t.. Hitting one of this will
make you ball wipe straight through the bricks without
stopping (Apart from JUMPER or SOLID bricks) This
means you can wipe out bricks VERY fast.. It lasts for
200 bricks......
SOLID BRICKS - These are bricks that you cannot destroy with your ball at
any time... Your ball will just rebound off them.....

TITLE/INTRO SCREEN CONTROLS:
----------------------------
There are 3 things you can do on the Title/Intro screen:
Either click your mouse in the Top-Left corner of the screen to quit the
game, and return to Workbench.
Or Click in either of the boxes at the bottom of the screen, to either
PLAY Breaker, or EDIT the Levels......
-----------------
IN GAME CONTROLS:
-----------------
At the start of each game you will see a STARTING-LEVEL option window. You
may start at any level from 1-20. To adjust the starting level simple move
your mouse pointer over either the increase>>> or Decrease<<< and press
the LEFT mouse button to change the level.
After adjusting the level (Or leaving it where it is currently set) just
at any time, or position, click the RIGHT mouse button to play the game.
During play you may press one of two keys....... Either:
P - To pause the game, and press again to re-start.
Q - To quit the game. (Game over)
After you have lost all of your balls you will be given the choice of
either pressing your LEFT-MOUSE-BUTTON to play again, or press the
RIGHT-MOUSE-BUTTON to return to the Title/Intro screen.........
----------------------
LEVEL EDITOR/DESIGNER:
----------------------
If you choose this option from the Title/Intro screen you will be looking
at the Level Editor screen display. With this you can do anything,
Load levels to and from Memory or Disk, choose any brick to put anywhere
on screen and design any shape you wish......
Although the options are self explanitory, here is a quick rundown on
what they do:
Each available command it used by clicking in the small RED box, attached
to the function you wish to activate.....
The functions are as follows:
SAVE TO DISK - Saves the currently designed screen to disk, as the level
which the level indicator is currently showing (1-50)
******** WARNING WARNING ********
If you intend to save a level to Disk, Make sure the disks
Write-Protect-Tab is OFF before you select this option....
LOAD FROM DISK - The opposite of the above, This will load the currently
selected level from disk into memory, and will
display it on-screen.
SAVE TO MEMORY - Similar to Save to Disk, But it only saves into Memory,
Not to disk. Ideal for testing a level to make sure
you`ve got it right....
LOAD FROM MEMORY - Opposite of Save to memory, This will load and display
From MEMORY what is in memory at the currently
selected level......
LEVEL 1-50 - Use this to select what Level you wish to use. Click in
either the top of the diamond to go up, or the bottom to
down.....
CLEAR SCREEN - Obvious really !!! This will wipe the designer screen
clear. But will not affect the design currently held in
memory. (Ideal if you make a mess !!!)
FILL SCREEN - This will fill the screen with the currently selected brick.
It can be any brick apart from the JUMPER brick.....
EXIT DESIGNER - This will quit the Level/Editor programme, and return you
to the Title/Intro screen. Then if you have made you own
levels you may play the game as normal to try them out...
At the bottom of the screen are two boxes containing the brick types.
The left larger box contains the selection of colours for Normal bricks.
The smaller box on the right contains the 10 special function bricks.
Both types of bricks are selected in the same way.
To choose the brick to use, just move the mouse pointer over the box
containing the brick type you require and click the left mouse button.
You can then plot that brick onto the designer area.
The Currently selected BRICK-TYPE will be shown at the top of the screen
for reference. Also, no matter what brick you are currently plotting with
you may use the RIGHT Mouse button to clear bricks from the display.....
The INVISIBLE bricks show up whilst in the Editor mode. They are black
but have a white box surrounding them, so you can see where they are.
This white box is not shown, when you are playing............
A point of warning here... There must only ever be either NONE or TWO of
the special JUMPER bricks on a level... If you attempt to save a level
to disk or memory which has 1 or more than 2 of these bricks, you will
be given a warning message, and you will have to correct your mistake....
--------
FINALLY:
--------
OK then..... I think that just about wraps it all up.....
Remember to read the Scrolly message of the Title/Intro screen.......
